The Vice President Medical Affairs is a leadership position to affect the quality outcomes and the development of clinical practices through leadership of initiatives that improve:

Responsibilities:

  • Medical Staff Affairs: Provide management oversight and guidance in credentialing and privileging, physician peer review, and for the medical staff function for quality assurance (including the medical staff bylaws and the rules and regulations).
  • Respond to physician behavior issues that take place in the hospital and resolve through the medical staff bylaws. Provide for a proactive physician clinical review process; e.g., physician profiles and balance scorecards
  • Education: Maintain the Texas Medical Association providership for CME and provide leadership to the CME committee to ensure medical education is based on clinical, quality and performance needs of our medical staff.
  • Oversee the graduate medical education program for UTHSC.
  • Clinical Quality and Utilization: Provide leadership for the measurement and improvement of clinical care processes and outcomes.
  • Link quality improvement to highly efficient resource use, standardization of clinical processes, improved clinical reputation, and clinical service excellence.
  • Clinical Standardization and Efficiency: Provide oversight and leadership to the clinical care standardization plan to ensure care is delivered appropriately and according to knowledge based practices.
  • Provide physician scorecards on quality and cost of care.
  • Program Development: Provide direct oversight to departments managed for effective management and achievement of imperatives.

a. Implement the Critical Care Intensivist program.

b. Continue the improvement and enhancement of the Hospitalist Program

c. Maintain the ACS Trauma II Certification

d. Oversight to the Family Care Center providers

e. Provide ongoing direction and support to meet hospital objectives.

  • Clinical Safety and Risk: Provide senior most leadership of safe care design, the reduction of risk of harm to patients, as well as medical legal risk.
  • Information Technology: Works closely with the IT transformation team to implement an electronic medical records.
  • Ensure quality and clinical imperatives are achieved.
  • Physician Leadership: Provide oversight and direction to physician leadership development for physician section heads and Medical Executive Committee.
  • Research: Provide senior leadership and ultimate accountability for clinical research efforts.
  • Provides oversight and participates in the Institutional Research Board.
  • System Integration: Provide support for the continual integration of clinical care services through the establishment of clinical standards, referral channels, and coordinated program development.
  • Physician Satisfaction: Be the senior leader responsible for the identification of those services, resources, personnel, and infrastructure necessary to create a highly desirable environment for physicians.
  • Be responsible for the development of a compact of mutual responsibility between physicians and the hospital’s administration.
  • Clinical Leadership: Work with nursing leadership and clinical VPs to collaboratively develop, implement, and manage all patient care quality, safety, and utilization initiatives.
