Summary:

The Cook is responsible for the preparation of all food items including meals, baking and any other items as determined by the needs of the Sisters, other customers/visitors and special function schedule. The Cook determines the presentation and the schedule for delivering meals and refreshments to ensure that high standards for presentation and food temperatures are maintained. The Cook collaborates with the Director and others to ensure the dietary needs of the Sisters and other customers are satisfied.

The Cook is expected to behave in a manner consistent with the Core Values and must collaborate with other Associates and departments to ensure the overall mission is achieved.

Responsibilities:

  • Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Ensure equipment is clean, well-maintained, and repaired.
  • Ensure sanitation of the main kitchen and all cooking equipment, refrigerators, storerooms, and freezers.
  • Set up, garnish, and break down steam tables and buffet lines, including special functions.
  • Prepare decorated party items, such as gourmet cooking and banquets.
  • Responsible for washing pots and pans used in the cooking process.
  • Handle and prepare food in accordance with acceptable sanitary standards.
  • Prepare food that is palatable, appetizing, and served in a quality manner.
  • Meet all meal schedules.
  • Avoid the waste of food.
  • Remove all necessary food items from the freezer, refrigerator, and/or storeroom in a timely manner to ensure the preparation of each meal meets anticipated menus.
  • Perform short-order cooking as required.
  • Cook and bake a variety of foods in both large and small quantities for both regular and modified diets.
  • Follow policies and procedures of CHRISTUS Health and those specific to Villa de Matel Center.
  • Attend and participate in interdisciplinary team and departmental meetings.
  • Attend and participate in appropriate and approved education events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Experience

  • 2 - 3 years of cooking/baking experience in a hotel/restaurant/institutional setting.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • A Food Handler's Permit is required in the state of employment within 30 days of hire.
