Summary:
The Regional Director of Health Information Management (HIM) provides support, direction, and focus for functions related to HIM operations in the individual ministries. The Regional Director of HIM may be responsible for multiple ministries and multiple facilities within that ministry. This role works collaboratively with the facility HIM departments, hospital leadership, case management, and physicians, as well as corporate teams, which include Informatics, IM, Revenue Cycle, Patient Financial Services, and Shared Services, to establish goals and objectives, identify and direct performance improvement. This role is responsible for supporting adherence to CHRISTUS standards, directives, and regulatory requirements, including JCAHO, Conditions of Participation, and Facility Bylaws, internal policies and procedures, and HIPAA. This role also works to ensure that financial performance objectives are achieved that are related to revenue cycle initiatives. The Regional Director of HIM is expected to maintain effective professional relationships with other departments and hospital leadership as appropriate to instruct, share ideas, and implement actions related to HIM functions. This role also acts as a resource available for education, consultation, and implementation of enhanced processes related to HIM functions.
Responsibilities:
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Ensures areas within health information management are directionally aligned with CHRISTUS Health operational standards, including the release of health information.
- Works with HIM Managers to establish performance development plans and supports the execution of plans.
- Works with CHRISTUS Hospitals, Revenue Cycle Departments, Clinical Departments, and corporate teams to identify areas for improvement and design processes that will increase knowledge of staff and improve outcomes in service, quality, and accuracy.
- Works with leadership to develop coding and HIM strategies.
- Achieve 95%+ standardization for HIM operations processes, workflow philosophies, metrics, and technology for Epic facilities.
- Facilitates design and implementation of software systems, optimization, and maintenance.
- Provides educational programs and in-service training to increase the efficiency of operations.
- Responds to organizational and customer needs with innovative programs to ensure service excellence.
- Ensures compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and directives from regulatory agencies.
- Prepares and presents performance reports to leadership and others as necessary.
- Responsible for identifying future changes in health care and integrating them into the HIM environment.
- Responsible for medical records processing and storage.
- Responsible for the release of information oversight.
- Provides strategic thought leadership, project management, and analytical support to meet performance and quality metrics/targets.
- Holds HIM Leaders/Managers/Staff within the region accountable to ensure operational targets are met with minimal volatility and within specific cost parameters.
- Holds HIM Leaders/Managers/Staff within the region accountable for effective, efficient, and compliant HIM operations.
- Maintains the regional HIM department budget.
- Holds all HIM-related 3rd Party / Vendor partners accountable for contract deliverables, compliant practices, and staff operations. Provides recommendations/feedback to executives on
- Vendor performance outcomes and trending, and adherence to hospital requirements and standards.
- Ensures timely resolution of all audit and quality-related HIM Operational issues and HIM Operational documentation compliance items.
- Communicates performance results and manages day-to-day customer relationships with key executive stakeholders.
- Develop trusted partnerships with key executives to achieve targets and identify new opportunities.
- Interacts with hospital and Medical Staff executives on a regular basis to educate them on current challenges, new ideas, and innovations to improve results.
- Mentors direct reports and coaches staff in the attainment of Revenue Cycle excellence.
- Works collaboratively with Leadership to achieve CHRISTUS goals and metrics.
- Manages all NETX hospital systems/ministries within a region.
- Has extensive knowledge of health information management functions including privacy and compliance.
- Possess a strong working knowledge in internal integrity requirements and procedures.
- Has a working knowledge in coding compliance.
- Knows governmental, federal, state and local regulations related to billing rules and compliance.
- Knows healthcare industry financial statistical indicators.
- Possesses strong analytical skills.
- Has excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Has strong knowledge of common office software applications including Power Point, Excel, Word, etc.
Job Requirements:
Education/Skills
- Bachelor's degree in medical record science, medical record administration, or healthcare administration, or equivalent hospital leadership experience required
Experience
- 10 years of experience in a medical record department of an inpatient facility, including 5 years in a managerial capacity, required
- Previous project management experience required
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- RHIA or RHIT certification preferred
In accordance with the CHRISTUS Health License, Certification and Registration Verification Policy, all Associates are required to obtain the required certifications for their respective positions within the designated time frame.
