The Surgery Technician, under the guidance of the Perioperative Registered Nurse, is responsible for the care and safety of the patient who comes under his/her care. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for insuring effective communication with the other O.R. team members, the patient, physician/surgeons, anesthesia providers and other ancillary departments. The Surgery Technician is trained in the delivery of age appropriate care by hospital policy. Performs assigned tasks in accordance with the hospital's philosophy, values, standards, policies and procedures.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:1. SURGERY TECHNICIAN ROLE. · Assists the circulating nurse in setting up room with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the surgical case. · Checks surgeon's preference card for correctness. · Performs scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures according to departmental policies. · Sets up sterile back table and trays with appropriate instruments and supplies based on surgeon's preference cards. · Performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts with the circulating nurse according to department policy. · Assists with draping of patients. · Anticipates needs of surgeon during cases. Identifies, prepares and passes instruments and supplies in an efficient manner. · Maintains operative field in a sterile, neat and dry environment. · Assists the circulating nurse in providing for patient's safety. 2. SURGERY TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES At completion of case: · Proper disposal of sharps · Returns instruments and supplies to case cart · Places linen in linen hamper · Places trash in appropriate receptacles · Removes gown and gloves prior to leaving the operating room · Assists in returning equipment and unused supplies to their proper places · Assists in the cleaning and room turn over 3. Assists in maintaining a clean, neat, appropriate operating room environment · O.R. lounges · O.R. halls · O.R. store rooms · O.R. central core 4. THE PATIENT'S RIGHTS TO CONFIDENTIALITY WILL BE MAINTAINED BY ALL NURSING PERSONEL. · Handles all patient communication and documentation in a confidential manner Does not release patient information/records without following hospital policy. 5. OBTAINS KNOWLEDGE OF AND DEMONSTRATES COMPLIANCE WITH INFECTION CONTROL POLICY AND PROCEDURES. · Practices universal precautions in all patient care. · Appropriately handles and disposes of sharps and biological matter. 6. DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE OF UNIT SPECIFIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES AND THE ABILITY TO SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY USE UNIT SPECIFIC PATIENT CARE EQUIPMENT IN THE DELIVERY OF QUALITY PATIENT CARE. · Completed Unit Specific Annual Competency Checklist. · Obtains necessary training prior to initial equipment use. · Assures equipment is in operating order prior to use. · Differentiates between patient complications and equipment malfunction. · Uses medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer's operating guidelines. 7. DUTIES SPECIFIC TO SERVICE LINE COORDINATORS. TEAM COORDINATORS SHOULD TAKE LEAD RESPONSIBILITY REGARDING COORDINATION OF CARE, SUPPLIES, AND EQUIPMENT INVOLVED IN THEIR SERVICE LINE(S). THIS INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING: · Initiate and follow up on the process of repairing or replacing any broken or damaged equipment or instruments for your designated service(s). · Initiate and follow up on the process of approval and ordering any new equipment, instruments or supplies for your designated service(s). · Check all stock specific to your service(s) monthly to assure stock is being rotated so that the oldest stock is used first. Monitor outdates during these checks to remove outdated supplies and ensure adequate supplies for the surgeon's needs. · Keep the preference cards for your designated service(s) updated to current surgeon's preferences. · Keep other staff members, who work with your surgeons, informed of new equipment or supplies and notify them about out-of-service equipment and instruments. · Provide direction to other staff members on procedure set-up, needed supplies and equipment, and implementation process for any procedure under your designated service line. · Notify staff of any significant changes to surgeon's preferences for commonly performed procedures. · Actively look for ways to improve the surgery experience for our patients, surgeons and staff. Discuss these ideas with the department manager or supervisor.
