A registered professional nurse responsible for providing quality diabetes education.In collaboration with clinical management and interdisciplinary staff of the DiabetesCenter, participates in the development and promotion of programs to prevent or control diabetes and its related co-morbidities. The Diabetes Educator evaluates effectiveness of center programs by means of analysis of outcome studies of center programs and activities as directed.
EDUCATION: Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) or successful completion of a Registered Dietician Program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree is preferred.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Current New Mexico Registered Nurse or Registered Dietician license required. BLS certification issued through American Heart Association required. Current certification in diabetes education by the NCBDE or five years clinical experience in diabetes with consistent progress towards certification is strongly preferred. Valid New Mexico Driver's License required.
SKILLS: Demonstrated professional and clinical competency in nursing and in diabetes education. Beginning knowledge of teaching, counseling and evaluation principles and techniques. Basic leadership abilities, high degree of self-confidence; self-motivated; effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work independently and as a team member, employ discretion and confidentiality in sensitive areas; read, interpret and follow instructions; beginning computer, research and data management skills; basic understanding of regulatory body standards, New Mexico Board of Nursing and Continuing Education Board requirements. Willingness to learn to read, write, and communicate in Spanish is necessary, if not bilingual. Working knowledge of all aspects of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Explorer and Outlook.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five (5) years clinical experience including working as an RN in an acute care setting and as a diabetes patient educator.

Responsible to: Manager, Diabetes Center

- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. While performing the duties of this position, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. In the line of patient care may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. May be required to lift, push, pull or carry educational equipment help patient come to sitting, standing or laying. Ability to lift 20 pounds.
- Working hours vary, with flexibility required due to unexpected changes in schedule and educational outreach sessions. Will require ability to drive and meet with providers and community members through out Northern New Mexico. Requires the ability to speak, listen, develop, and communicate written materials.
