POSITION SUMMARY: Works with victims of violence in a medical setting by providing specialized advocacy services for survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual assault. Services are designed to empower survivors through informed support; resource connection; and personalized advocacy, ensuring their rights and needs are addressed comprehensively.

Requirements

DUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree or higher in a human services related field is preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Must have a valid, unresticted New Mexico Driver’s License. Within timeframe required by the City of Santa Fe VPU, complete: 40-hour Victim Advocacy Certification; Mental Health First Aid Certification, Peer Support OR Community Support Worker Certification, Training in Trauma Informed Care

SKILLS:

  • Understanding of interpersonal violence issues and the needs of survivors of violence and abuse
  • Ability to work effectively with in an interdisciplinary team and promote a team approach to patient care.
  • Trauma-informed service delivery skills
  • Strong program development skills
  • Cultural humility and understanding of intersectional factors of power and oppression
  • Preferably bilingual/bicultural with local community roots and connections

EXPERIENCE:  One (1) year of experience of working with survivors of domestic violence, interpersonal violence, human trafficking, or sexual assault.

-Responsible to: Director, Community Health and Health Equity

ENVIRONMENT:

Multiple settings and variable unpredictable situations in the ED/inpatient, primary care, and community settings.  May work in a traditional clinic office setting, clinic setting, and/or ED/inpatient setting. Exposure to infectious diseases. Subject to varying unpredictable situations. Multiple simultaneous activities around patient care.  Exposure to infectious diseases and intermittent exposure possible to blood, excrements, odors and noise. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Emotional and physical ability to cope with stress and physical nature of inpatient work with behavioral health patients; the possibility of emergency lifting and need for physical interventions.  Must be able to handle emergency/crisis situations and prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics. Ability to work in crisis and potentially hazardous situation(s). Exposure to infectious diseases and intermittent exposure is possible to blood, excrement, odors, and noise.  Hearing and visual acuity within normal limits.  Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination required.
