Student Intern - Respiratory Therapy in Alamogordo, NM

Summary:

The Respiratory Student Extern administers respiratory care to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system under the direction of a physician and by prescription under control of a training supervisor. The Respiratory Student Extern will receive age specific competency assessment until the training supervisor determines that the permittee is competent to perform specific respiratory care functions independently and in accordance with the safe practice and patient care safety standards of the facility. The Respiratory Student Extern sets up and operates various types of equipment to be utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases and/or illnesses. He/she is involved in acute, clinical and/or life-threatening patient care areas and situations. This description is not intended to be a complete list of duties. Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide services based on the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and other related criteria appropriate population in his/her assigned area
• Maintains required core competencies.
• Complies with set Policies and Procedures (i.e. name tag, dress code, parking, smoking, etc.)
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide services based on the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and other related criteria appropriate to the age specific and/or cultural diversity of the population served in his/her assigned area.
• Maintains required core competencies. 
• Complies with set Policies and Procedures (i.e. name tag, dress code, parking, smoking, etc.) 
• Administers respiratory care and diagnostic procedures and therapies as assigned by the Department Manager, training supervisor or designee to include, but not limited to: Humidity and Aerosol therapy; CPT/Flutter; IPPB; Oxygen therapy; SVNs; USNs; Suctioning; Oximetry; ABGs; MDIs; PEFR; EKGs; Bi-Pap therapy; Calorimetry; Trach Care; Incentive Spirometry. 
• Performs CPR and is currently certified for basic life support by AHA. 
• Understands and practices safe respiratory care techniques. 
• Adheres to all universal precautions. 
• Is able to assess, plan, and provide individualized care for patients in compliance with physician’s orders, taking into account the metal status, development, and physical needs of each patient based on age, i.e., neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, geriatrics. 
• Performs specialized skills involved in advanced life support or in intensive care utilizing additional knowledge in bedside monitoring, management and weaning from mechanical ventilation, ABGs, and nutritional assessments. 
• Collects and interprets arterial blood gases and attests to the competency to perform this procedure according to department Policies & Procedures. 
• Performs EKGs according to department Policies & Procedures. 
• Performs Holter and/or Event monitoring according to department Policies & Procedures. 
• Administers drugs in accordance with department Policies & Procedures and attests to the competency to perform those procedures. Is aware of hazards/ contraindications associated with use of such drugs. 
• Performs oxygen and equipment rounds in accordance with department Policies & Procedures. 
• Documents procedures in Medical Record and department records in an accurate, concise and legible manner to ensure statistical and charging accuracy according to department Policies & Procedures. 
• Performs required equipment maintenance, preparation, cleaning, and sterilization per department Policies & Procedures. 
• Troubleshoots equipment problems. 
• Communicates all clinical problems or patients requiring further evaluation to Department Manager, training supervisor or designee. 
• Communicates personnel problems and schedule requests to Department Manager, training supervisor or designee. 
• Participates in or presents hospital/department in-service education classes. 
• Attends mandatory in-service classes and department meetings. 
• Consistently accomplishes work assignments through effective time utilization and prioritization of assignments 
• Performs approved respiratory care duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision. 
• Assists and assumes specific other responsibilities as delegated by the Department Manager, training supervisor or designee. 

Requirements:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Current American Heart – HeartSaver or Basic Life Support (BLS) card.
• Performs related responsibilities as assigned.
