The Vice President, Physician Enterprise Counsel advises CHRISTUS executives and management staff on legal matters arising in connection with the operations of the CHRISTUS Health Physician Enterprise (consisting of the operations of all CHRISTUS medical groups), including physician employment and recruitment arrangements. This counsel also provides Legal support for joint ventures and other complex agreements with independent physicians, and serves as a subject-matter expert and peer support for CHRISTUS Regional General Counsel in connection with transactions with physicians.

The Vice President, Physician Enterprise Counsel must have extensive knowledge and experience in areas of law relating to medical group operations and employment, recruitment and services agreements, and other transactions with physicians and other referral sources. Areas of required expertise include Stark, Anti-Kickback, tax-exemption, and other applicable laws and regulations. This counsel must also have strong working knowledge of HIPAA privacy and security regulations and experience with self-disclosures and responses to governmental investigations in connection with compliance issues relating to physicians.

The Physician Enterprise Counsel works collaboratively with regional and system leaders across the System, and with CHRISTUS Regional Counsel and other internal and external counsel. This counsel serves as a resource for leaders across the CHRISTUS system on legal issues relating to physician agreements, with the ability to recognize systemic and other significant matters to be addressed with the Chief Legal Counsel and General Counsel. This position requires the ability to effectively manage and coordinate with staff attorneys, outside counsel and paralegals to achieve positive results while functioning at a law firm partner level.

  • Juris Doctor Degree.
  • Thorough knowledge of all health care related laws and regulations.
  • At least 10 years of legal experience in providing healthcare regulatory and compliance advice and counsel, including at least 5 years of significant experience and responsibility for legal matters arising in connection with: the operation of large multi-specialty physician groups; joint ventures and other transactions with physicians, including drafting contracts, evaluating and assisting in developing transaction structures and agreements to achieve business goals in a legally compliant manner; serving as lead attorney for healthcare transactions; reporting to governing boards; developing and updating policies; and addressing compliance issues relating to transactions with physicians.
