POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sterile Processing Supervisor provides supports the surgery department as well as other departments in the hospital where operative and other invasive procedures may be performed. The Sterile Processing Supervisor must follow recommended practices; the associate assists in the decontaminating, cleaning, maintaining, handling, storing, and/or sterilizing of surgical instruments and powered equipment and ensures other Associates involved in sterile processing procedures are following the same protocols.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs effective and timely decontamination of surgical instruments and powered equipment in a manner that minimizes the risk to the associate.
  • Inspects surgical instruments for function after cleaning and prepares items for storage and/or sterilization according to recommended practices to ensure sterility is achieved and maintained up to the point of use. Reports any identified needs for reorder, repair, or sharpening of instruments to the Surgery team leaders and/or instrument technician.
  • Responsible for the operation of steam sterilizers and Sterrad sterilizers. Maintains knowledge of exposure times and temperature settings for appropriate sterilizers. Monitors sterilizer for proper functioning by mechanical, chemical, and biological indicators according to established standards.
  • Ensures quality assurance data is recorded from the sterilization cycle and maintained for a time period specified by local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sterilizers on a scheduled basis as outlined by the manufacturers' written instructions regarding the proper cleaning. Performs troubleshooting for minor problems with equipment. Notifies biomedical engineering for problems not able to troubleshoot.
  • Ensures proper assembly of instrument sets and accuracy of instrument set count sheets for all sets. Notifies Surgery team leaders when discrepancies are noted between the instrument sets and count sheets.
  • Prepares items for storage and/or sterilization according to recommended practices to ensure sterility is achieved and maintained up to the point of use. Ensures sterilized instruments and/or sets are returned to assigned locations after processing.
  • Collaborates with the OR team to facilitate meeting the needs of the daily Surgery Schedule.
  • Provides supervision of SPD techs to facilitate work flow by making daily assignments and maintaining monthly staffing schedule. Notifies Surgery Director/Clinical Supervisor of staffing needs and issues.
  • Maintains permanent records of sterilization quality reports and reports any problems with sterilization monitoring to biomedical engineering, Infection Control, and Surgery Director/Clinical Supervisor.
  • Coordinates orientation of new SPD associates in conjunction with the Surgery Clinical Educator.
  • Maintains adequate par levels of SPD supplies to insure daily operations while remaining within the operational budget.
  • Maintains an organized log book for instrument and supply decontamination and sterilization needs for other departments in the CSHS. Insures efficient processing of those needs in
