Provides supportive care of psychiatric and chemical dependency behavioral health patients in the Emergency Department, Behavioral Health Unit, as well as other departments of the hospital as needed, and providing follow-up care utilizing a peer support approach to care. Provides social support to patients at all stages in the continuum of recovery and may precede formal treatment to promote patient motivation for change; accompany treatment by providing community connection during treatment; follow treatment by supporting relapse prevention; and/or be provided apart from treatment for patients that are in need of peer-based social support. The Peer Support team works within the Community Health Department to provide peer support to the patients served at CHRISTUS St. Vincent and in the community.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) issued through American Heart Association. Must have proof of certification from the Human Services Department Office of Peer Recovery and Engagement. CPI Certification preferred.


  • Ability to quickly establish rapport with patients experiencing psychiatric and chemical dependency as assigned for peer support
  • Demonstrate empathy and caring in peer mentoring and recovery coaching
  • Engage in supportive measures, including advocacy, linkage to resources, and providing health and wellness information, educational assistance and help acquiring new skills
  • Utilizes recovery orientated, person-centered, voluntary, relationship focused, and trauma informed approach to support patients
  • Provide direct assistance in completing tasks including filling out applications, obtaining public benefits, obtaining an ID, or providing assistance in identifying resources such as clothing donation or food banks
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including data entry in Excel
  • Ability to carry out both verbal and written instructions and establish and maintain positive working relationships with patients, care teams, co-workers, community partners, and program participants
  • Ability to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in the field of peer support working with behavioral health population and/or substance use disorders.

Works irregular hours. Multiple simultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to infectious diseases and/or hazardous body fluids and airborne contagions. Subject to varying unpredictable situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in a clinical program setting. Working schedules may include evening, overnight, and/or weekend hours. Some on-call/overtime may be required. Must be available on short term notice for shift coverage. May be subject to combatant behavior. Must be able to drag 75 lbs. and lift up to 50 lbs. May be subject to exposure to CRTs and VDTs.
