The MPCS is responsible for assisting the nurse in monitoring patients, collects information and documents data. Prepares lab specimens per policy. Assists with wound care and dressing changes. Performs bedside testing such as oximetry, glucometery, and other point of care tests as directed. Operates and monitors patient monitoring systems specific to unit. Specific duties include: insures storage and cleanliness of equipment on the unit. Inventories and processes broken equipment as required. Documents all interventions and data collected, communicates with the primary nurse on findings and interventions.

The MPCS stocks medical supplies, and paper goods; assists with ordering of supplies, restocking of supplies, and cleanliness of departments. Assists physicians and nurses with procedures under their direction; assures proper storage of E-cylinders (oxygen); organizes care in a manner that contributes to the overall quality of the team; and performs other job duties as assigned, within their scope of practice. The MPCS is a vital part of the surgical team and acts as a mentor and preceptor to new staff.

EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED equivalent, or one (1) or more years of service in a clinical area, or equivalent trade or vocational school in medical/surgical patient care.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Current BLS issued through American Heart Association is required. MPCS will be required to acquire a higher clinical degree or certification to be able to perform advanced expanded duties within 2 years of higher or be currently enrolled or enroll in a Nursing program within 2 years of date of hire.

SKILLS: The MPCS must have critical thinking skills and the ability to prioritize quickly. Knowledge of first aid and life support is necessary. Must be able to pass skills competency checklist as required for skill advancement. Must have excellent communication skills. Computer skills required to enter data into the Electronic Medical Record, enter orders for lab & x-rays, print schedules and review and generate reports as needed for patient admissions and recovery.

IN-HOUSE SURGICAL DUTIES:

  • Recording of I&Os Preop/PACU
  • Assist with Preop and PACU room turnovers and cleaning of monitors, equipment and gurney's
  • Assist staff with transport of patients to the Operating Room
  • Assist with Operating Room turnovers
  • Assistance with connecting the patient in the PACU to the monitor to get vital signs
  • Greeting family members and escorting them into Preop/PACU
  • Transport of patients to the In-Patient Unit
  • Transfer of patients to the wheelchair and transport of patient to their vehicles for discharge home
  • Accompany and help with getting patient's up to bathroom
  • Training will be provided by Clinical Supervisor/Director/Manager

IN-HOUSE SURGICAL ADVANCED/EXPANDED DUTIES:

  • Insertion of or Removal of peripheral intravenous therapy lines

EXPERIENCE: One year hands on patient care, clinical experience or equivalent experience.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION:

-Responsible to:Reports directly toSurgical Services Director/Clinical Manager or designee for essential job duties and day-to-day responsibilities.

Works irregular hours. Multiple simultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to x-rays and infectious diseases such as hepatitis-B and AIDS.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle emergency/crisis situations, prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking, kneeling, bending, and heavy lifting. Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics. Frequently lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients or equipment. Hearing and visual acuity must be within normal limits. Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination required. The work is not only physically strenuous but can be stressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations and suffering patients.
